The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded a global alarm as mental health conditions surpass one billion cases worldwide. The new reports World Mental Health Today and the Mental Health Atlas 2024 highlight the urgent need for systemic reform.
Mental health conditions, disorders, including anxiety and depression, remain the second leading cause of long-term disability across all societies and age groups. WHO experts estimate that these conditions cost the global economy nearly $1 trillion annually in lost productivity. Despite the staggering impact, most countries continue to invest inadequately in mental health services.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed that transforming mental health care is one of the most pressing public health challenges. He emphasized that mental health should be treated as a basic right, not a privilege.
The reports reveal troubling gaps. Government spending on mental health still accounts for just two percent of health budgets, unchanged since 2017. High-income countries spend up to $65 per person, while low-income countries invest as little as four cents. Globally, there are only 13 mental health workers for every 100,000 people. Suicide remains a leading cause of death among young people, with nearly 727,000 lives lost in 2021.
Despite these challenges, progress is visible. More than 80 percent of countries now include mental health support in emergency responses, up significantly since 2020. Early intervention programs in schools and communities are also expanding, while telehealth services are becoming increasingly available.
The WHO urges governments to prioritize community-based, person-centered care, expand the mental health workforce, and enforce stronger rights-based legislation. Without urgent action, millions will remain untreated, and societies will continue to face rising health and economic burdens.
Mental health, WHO warns, must be recognized as fundamental to both individual well-being and global development.
